I used to hold the pen in a way that I had to do most of the work in producing consistent lines. Then I learnt that there’s a better way. A way that’ll make the grip do most of the work in producing consistent lines. “You gotta let the wave do the work.” (Ref. Surf’s up)
Let’s take a look at a couple of the common grips and their problems. Your grip most likely falls somewhere in between these.
The normal grip
Seems perfectly fine at first. But it leaves too much freedom of movement for the pen. As a result, it takes effort to produce consistent lines.
The choke grip
The pen is held tightly and there’s no freedom of movement. While this enables one to produce consistent lines it builds up fatigue very quickly.
The 3-point grip
Holding the pen in three different places. The thumb pushes right and the knuckle and middle finger push left. The index finger merely rests on the pen. The freedom of movement is restricted horizontally but not vertically, allowing you to make consistent lines easily.
